Tangled in Melian’s Web

To all my friends out there wondering where “Beren” has been journeying and why the waters of Tarn Aeluin have been so still, many apologies. I was stuck in a parallel to Melian’s girdle that ensnared Beren Erchamion and ultimately led him to Luthien and locked him into his future fate. But hey I still have two hands and can type!

I’ve decided to leave my company of 12 years. This has been a very difficult decision. At one (or many) points I have thought of this company being it for the rest of my career. This thinking started with a very innovative business and research approach and a desire to build something new in 1996.

When my son became stricken with Doose Syndrome people in the company, many of them way above me in the hierarchy, helped my family – without hesitation or question or even any paperwork/bureaucracy at all. I was truly amazed at how a Fortune 100 company could act in such a way to help an individual.

Throughout my time here I was given many great opportunities and I had some great managers that ultimately became friends. I have met and worked with a bunch of people that I really respected and learned a lot from.

Despite all these things the reality that I as an individual needed to grow started to creep into my thinking last year. Future growth was limited in my organization – and I don’t really mean title (which means relatively little to me), but learning and innovation opportunities. I also desired greater discipline and a realistic approach to dealing with organizational management.

In the end I have accepted a new position. I have to move from the home and town that I really do love, but I’m hopeful that my new job will have a major impact on how a large number of people deal day to day with type-2 diabetes, and perhaps if things go well type-1, and other chronic diseases.

To all the friends I made during my 12 years I can only say “thank you”. I’ll see you – I’m not going far {perhaps for some of you not far enough :-)}, but just remember if you are in great need then say this:

A Elbereth Gilthoniel,
silivren penna míriel
o menel aglar elenath!
Na-chaered palan-díriel
o galadhremmin ennorath,
Fanuilos, le linnathon
nef aear, sí nef aearon!

It may or may not make you feel better, but I won’t hear you – after all I’m not actually from Middle Earth despite everything you might have thought. Certainly I’m not an elf either!

But seriously to all my friends you have not seen the last of me, I’ll be around, and best of luck!

Aa’ menle nauva calen ar’ ta hwesta e’ ale’quenle…
